Mountain Planning Checklist

Mountain Planning Checklist

If you are hitting the slopes this winter season, make sure that you’re properly prepared for your outing to make the most out of your time and money!

How’s the Weather?
Before you head out, it is important to check the weather forecast for the day to ensure you are prepared for weather changes during the day – the goal is to stay warm and dry.

What Does the Snow Report Say?
Of course, it’s awesome to hit the slopes after a night of fresh powder snowfall but if you are prepared you can ski and board in less ideal conditions. The main advantages of skiing or boarding on powder is that it’s much softer and smoother, allowing you to pick up speed and not worry as much about injuring yourself if you fall. Powder snow is great for all skill levels to learn and ride on. All of the local mountains provide accurate snow reports – check their websites for current updates.

Are There Any Events?
If you plan to travel to a mountain out of town, you will want to maximize your time on the slopes and get the most bang for your buck. So check the mountain’s website to see if they’re hosting any events, competitions or conferences while you’re planning your trip. If the park is especially busy due to an event it will mean longer lines lifts and everything else. It might also increase accommodation prices at the hotels.

Check Your Skis or Board
If you’re planning your first trip up the mountain this season you’ll definitely want to pull out all of your gear and go over everything to see what repairs or maintenance needs to be done. You might have to repair a chip or replace a cracked board or pair of skis. Check to make sure that your gear is still the proper size and length for you and your family. And make sure that you have your board or skis waxed properly in preparation for the season. Waxing can be a bit of a process so if you’re not sure about it bring your gear in to The Destination to have it done professionally.

Do Your Boots Fit Properly?
Boots are second in importance only to your board or skis. Make sure that your boots don’t pinch your feet or make your feet ache. Good fitting boots can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your time on the slopes. If your boots aren’t working for you come in and get custom-fitted for a pair of boots that are tailored to your exact foot size and shape. We have an excellent selection of boots, and our fitters are skilled and experienced.

Do You Need New Clothing?
Make sure last season’s clothing still fits and doesn’t have any tears in it and you should be good to go. If you need a new jacket or pants though we have some tips for you.

  • While you can really use any type of jacket for skiing, it is important that the ski jacket you choose is warm and waterproof. It’s a bonus if you have a liner in the jacket that makes it easier for you to shed a layer if the temperature becomes warm. And you’ll want zippered, waterproof pockets to protect your phone and wallet.
  • It’s even more important to get a great pair of pants that will keep you dry and warm. Look for a high waterproof rating (between 10,000 and 20,000mm) and taped seams that will keep you completely dry.
  • You’ll definitely want pants with built-in gaiters that fit snugly over your boots to keep snow and moisture out of your boots and pants.

At The Destination, we have everything you’ll need to get ready for the season as well as some tips and tricks to help you choose the right mountain for your day on the slopes! Come by today, we’re located at 1550 Marine Drive in North Vancouver.
